In your example, you are only going to get $600 in either case. You are always going to be “losing” the $400 as a selling fee to your affiliate. So you have to price your product so that $600 is enuf for you to make a profit and stay in business.
You have hit upon the weakest part of the “affiliate” business model. If you can cut out the middleman, you can save a lot of money. In the 1950’s everything went thru “wholesalers”. Now they hardly exist.

Affiliates work for merchants by bringing customers to the merchant’s front door (in this case the website) and earning money in the process. If you are an affiliate of a company and you send a visitor to the merchant website through your special link, you are now eligible to be credited for anything that the visitor buys while at the merchant website. When a visitor buys something, the merchant will pay you a commission …sometimes up to 75% of what the item costs. So, it’s simple; as an affiliate, it is your job to get web surfers (traffic) to visit the merchant site.
The role of an affiliate is to sell the products/services that are offered by the merchants. When a purchase is made by the traffic that you generate, you will get a commission (anywhere between 1-75% of the sale)! Most companies pay commissions every 2 weeks, some instantly and some once per month.

That will happen regardless, whether you allow it or not. Many times your affiliate will do this just to see how rich the product is. They may not want to pay full price for a product or service they are not sure of promoting so they’ll buy the product through their affiliate link. That’s call affiliate theft. One of the ways to get over that is to cloak your affiliate links.
You can do a such on google for “cloak affiliate links”
Also you may want to avoid affiliate programs in the internet marketing niche, because people in this niche know about affiliate commissions and affiliate links.

I have ran across companies that allow you to buy from your affiliate link, but not often. Affter all, they get the same amount of money regardless of who buys it.
Most do not allow it and you risk losing your affiliate rights with them.

Because all of them will be different. Because of all of the different requirements and stipulations that you have to read, you may even need some software to help you sort it all out and decide which one is the best for you and your affiliate marketing business.
Choosing the affiliate marketing programs that you want to go with is not hard to do at all. Choose something that you know about, and that you can be known as an expert about. The more passionate you are about the service or product, the better, as it will shine through. Once you have all of your programs in place, check out SEO, and find out how to get your website up on the first page of the search engines. This is going to take hard work and determination, but you can do it.
